Community

People are social beings.  Much of our well being comes from our interactions with other people.   We accomplish this with our families, our co-workers at work, our clients and customers, friends and social acquaintances in our daily activities.  There is much evidence to suggest that when people are removed from these social interactions, there are measurable mood and health changes that occur.

With this belief in mind, urbanSeniorLiving has grown from a philosophy about social contact and the preservation of independence which we believe to be at the core of health and well being.  It is within Communities that people find social connections, access to services and entertainment, and the opportunity to be exposed to new acquaintances and opportunities.  Throughout history people have lived and socialized in villages, towns and cities, as opposed to the solitude of remote places.

A pedestrian friendly town or business district is an ideal place to live for many reasons.   It puts a menu of important services and activities within an easy and efficient reach.  It offers diversity of choice, service, social interaction, environment, entertainment, and opportunities to choose from when the need arises.

The overwhelming majority of independent senior living communities are isolated from the town centers and business districts that support the population of the community.  In the early stages of life, when families are large, there are three or four cars in the family, everyone is working or going to school, most of the shopping and socializing is happening throughout the week as well as with families at home.  Later in life, many of these conditions have changed, and living in places that are distant from the center of town has distinct disadvantages.

A pedestrian friendly town center is an important part of the maintenance of health, independence, social stimulation, and opportunities that feed the soul.  All urbanSeniorLiving communities are located within a town center.  These Campuses offer a wonderful collection of parks, churches, schools, shops, restaurants, community events, and services.  It is an environment which encourages walking, participating in events of interest, shopping anytime there is a need, meeting and watching new people, taking classes, going to church, and attending community sponsored concerts and events.  It is a very healthy and stimulating way to live.

Over the span of the last 30 years, we have seen our residents living long and active lives.  They comment frequently about the freedoms they have and the excitement that is around them every day.  We have also seen a very low incidence of urbanSenior residents going into assisted living or nursing care…….. a wonderful outcome.

The Old Orchard Business District of Webster Groves, Missouri is a perfect example of a pedestrian friendly campus that provides services, shopping dining and many choices for entertainment.
